(Re)-learning about my faith in depth
I joined the Deepening Faith course as I was keen to (re-)learn about the core values of my Christian faith. I was confirmed over 20 years ago and have not studied it in any depth since then. The group I attended was the Monday night men’s group hosted by Neil Foxhall and led by Steve Bailey and John Muggleton.
I must admit that I found the first couple of sessions a little daunting as it became very apparent how little I knew and I was also perhaps naively not expecting some of the questions to be quite so personal. But encouraged by the openness of the others in the group I started to join in more as the course went on. As well as analysing the bible passages given to us, a large part of the course was spent with everyone sharing his own interpretations of the Holy Trinity and the relevance in his own life and our own church in Walton.
We all appreciated both Steve and John’s vast knowledge, enthusiasm and encouragement in leading the group through some interesting and insightful discussions. So much so, that on several occasions we only scratched the surface of the part of the Holy Trinity that we were studying for that week and we would often run over time.
My wife, Emily, attended the course on Tuesday nights and it was interesting for us to talk through what we had discussed in our groups and to see how we could better apply it in both our own and our family lives. Something, which I know, we will continue to strive to do in the future.
One thing that has became apparent to me is that although I now have a better understanding of my faith and what it means to me, I still have a lot more to learn and to do.
The Monday night men’s group has been hosted by Neil for a few years now and the Deepening Faith course has provided a good opportunity for new members like myself to join in. The group will continue with further studies after the Easter break. If anyone is interested in joining they should talk to either Neil or Steve.
I would like to thank everyone in my group for being so welcoming.
