Many years ago, I attended a three-day residential ‘selection conference’ which was (and remains) part of the Church of England’s process for discerning candidates for ordained ministry. During the interviews, two of the selectors, in our one-to-one conversations, spoke about ‘vocation’ in ways that revealed their underlying assumptions.
