St Mary with St John
Youth Services
Since their start our Youth Services have been a consistently new and exciting challenge for our church. These contemporary worship services are specially designed for teenagers and young adults but everyone is made to feel welcome and lots of people, young and old, have come along and enjoyed the worship, teaching and fellowship.
When we started the music was often provided by Youth bands from various other churches - we had bands from The Coign Church, Woking, Christ Church, Guildford and Walton Baptist Church. We have also enjoyed visits from several other Youth groups and visits to other churches' Youth Services.
One of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the creation of our own Youth band which has already gone through several changes of personnel and continues to grow in confidence and expertise.
Another exciting development was the formation of the Youth Service Team - a group of adults and young people who, in Action Teams, plan, prepare and lead the services. Each Action Team is responsible for 2 or 3 services per year.
We were also very involved in all three Emly Deanery Youth Services, providing drama, music and projection. These Deanery Youth Services were pioneering events in the life of our Diocese, attempting to get all the churches in a Deanery to co-operate in joint youth worship events.
In 2004 we held the first of our Travelling Youth Services at St Erconwald's, the local Catholic church, followed by equally successful services at Walton Baptist Church and Walton Methodist Church. Travelling Youth Services are another venture in co-operation, but at a more local and ecumenical level. The idea is to get Walton churches working together on Youth Services and eventually to develop joint Youth Services between all the churches in Walton. The inspiration for this has come from our joint Alpha courses which have shown us that co-operation is not only possible, but can be lots of fun!
