St Mary's Church - Church Street

History

'For over 1000 years the House of God has stood on the low hill overlooking the river Thames. During these centuries the Family of God has come to this place to offer Him praise and worship, the service of their lives, and to receive from Him His gifts of Grace. The great moments of their lives have been blessed by the ministry of His sacraments; their joys and sorrows have been shared with Him and their needs have been offered to Him in prayer. Kings and Queens have worshipped here; young and old have sung their praises here; week by week, year in year out, the members of the Church Family have come here in ages past as they do today. The Church has never been just a building, but the home of the living fellowship of those who belong to the Lord - who are the Church.'

(The Church of St Mary, Walton-on-Thames - A History:
Irene R. Sandells 1992.)

Genealogy

More help with tracing your family tree can be found on the Diocese of Guildford site. Our parish records are archived at the Surrey History Service. You can find out much more about our local history at Elmbridge Museum.

Our parish office holds a map of graves in the churchyard (not the adjacent council cemetery). We also hold a record of monumental inscriptions for both the churchyard and cemetery, which were still legible in the early 1970s.

The burial registers we keep in the parish begin in September 1942. Our Baptism registers go back to 1924, and our Marriage registers to 1944.

Registers before that can be viewed in Woking. (Surrey History Service)
